(between Dolores St & Oakwood St)
San Francisco, CA 94110
Bi-Rite is the coziest ice cream shop with an awesome location, right down the street from Tartine and across the street from Dolores Park. At Bi-Rite the ice-cream is made in small batches, the ingredients are organic and all their packaging is biodegradable.
The ice cream consistency is great -- creamy, thick, and dense... just the way real ice cream should be.
On the real though, almost every single flavor offered is superb and unique. Balsamic Strawberry, Mexican Chocolate with salted peanuts, Malted Vanilla with peanut brittle and milk chocolate, Brown Sugar with caramel swirl and their Mint Chip is naturally color-less which i love !
Parking was annoying. As I was circling around looking for a space, I noticed a really long line twisting almost around the corner. I thought it was a line to a club or something but when I finally found a spot, I headed closer and realized it was a line just for a darn scoop of ice cream!
The line seemed a bit long, but it moved fast, plus the ice cream is well WORTH the wait anyhow. If I lived in SF, I would frequent this place at least once a week and withstand the long line. The place is small and can only seat so many people but there's a huge park across the creamery so tight seating's not a big deal.

Salted caramel--some say it's too sweet, but I thought it was perfection. It's one of my favorite things in the world and I got to taste it in ice cream form. It was orgasmic I tell you.
Roasted banana--yup, tastes just like bananas but with a hint of something more savory rather than sweet. It was amazing as well.
Ginger and brown sugar - The ginger tastes like my favorite ginger candy from Ranch 99. It was so amazingly gingery delicious! The brown sugar was delicious too, but not as delicious as the other three.

**If you prefer not to wait, you can get a pre-packed pint of their ice cream at their Bi-Rite market a couple of steps down.

Yum, Bi-Rite! The first time I went there, I was too full from my Ike's Place "supreme nacho boy" sandwich. Any who, when I went inside one flavor caught my eye was salted caramel. Salty and sweet sounded really strange to me. The second time I went there, I decided to try it and see what how it would taste. I have to agree with you! It definitely hit the spot! The third time I wanted to get some some Bi-Rite was on a sunny weekend afternoon and once I drove by it and saw the huge long line. I passed on it and tried a place I heard not too far by in the mission called Humphry Slocombe which has some pretty interesting flavors. If you never been there before, I would say to try it out. If you're feeling a little daring, try some unique flavors like Foie Gras or Sweet Summer Corn. Go for it!
ReplyDeleteI love Bi-Rite. Ever since my co-worker introduced me to this place, I've been spreading the news. My best guy friend first stop when he returns to the city is always bi-rite, and he studies in so-cal. That's a long drive to not go see your girlfriend first. My favorite favors has to be balsamic strawberries and roasted banana. And this place has a line up until closing time everyday.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your post, it reminded me how long it has been since I've visited bi-rite (3 months!). Your post is well written. If this is the post that you'd want to improve/rewrite for class, you might want to add more descriptions and details on your experience at bi-rite. It can help readers put pieces together and create a picture, and not just see it as a regular review. You can always add interviews you have about people that went to bi-rite with you--like friends and family, or even people in line.
OMG Bi-Rite! My roommate and her boyfriend took me here a few weeks ago and I fell in love! They had some really cool blends of ice cream. I've only been there twice. The first time I went I got two scoops of the coffee toffee and the vanilla malted something or other. I enjoyed both of them but the coffee toffee more. Then, the second time I went I got a make your own sundae! I got coffee toffee again and roasted almond vanilla (I can't remember the whole name haha) topped with chocolate fudge, whipped cream, and toffee chunks. I can't believe I ate the whole thing! It was so yummy I couldn't put it down. But after that I went into some kind of dessert coma. Anyways, I would recommend it to anyone if they have a sweet tooth to fix. They have a really unique selection of ice cream and I don't think you can ever really go wrong with any of the choices you can make. Also, it's not that bad of a wait, it goes by pretty fast.
ReplyDeleteEven though I've only known about Bi-Rite for a month, this will be one of the things I will miss when I move back home after I graduate. Actually there will be a lot of things I will miss. There is this place on Taraval and 25th, I believe, that is my ABSOLUTE favorite gelato parlor of all time. It's called Marco Polo. Well, I shouldn't go too off topic, so I'll just leave it at this: GO TO BI-RITE CREAMERY! :]
I love bi-rite's unique flavors...my fav is earl gray. but i gotta say, i hate how inconsistent is in in terms of availability of flavors. have you ever tried mitchell's? if so, which do you like better?
ReplyDeleteI have yet to go to bi-rite creamery because i prefer going to Mitchel's ice cream on San Jose Ave. I have been meaning to go to bi-rite because i've heard so many positive reviews from friends. I yelped it the other day before reading your blog but it didnt really stand out to me from the reviews but after reading your take on it, i think the next ice cream crave ill have bi-rite creamery first on my list. the unique flavors you listed like balsamic strawberry make me question its taste because im thinking of a salad dressing which would make the ice scream tartish, sweet but with a sour taste? maybe as an add to this blog you could compare it to some other unique ice cream places around the sf area. maybe listing them and where they are located as a comparison to bi-rite.
